Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
I thought this book was totally original and interesting.
It’s 2575 and humanity has infiltrated space when two rival corporations go to war and people like Katy and Ezra are caught in the crossfire. After being forced to evacuate and flee an enemy ship, a deadly virus spreads complicating an already complicated situation. Katy and Ezra are forced to use their wits to survive all the while healing their broken relationship.
What we are given is a dossier comprised of interviews, emails, memos, public reports, action reports, message logs, verbal accounts of surveillance footage, classified documents and more. It all tells the story of what happened during and after the evacuation.
I thought the way this story was laid out was completely unique. Reading through all the reports was fun and made it feel like I was playing an active role in the story. I couldn’t get enough and wanted to keep combing through everything to find answers about what was going on.
The writing was simple but filled with detail. The world building was just enough to make the story interesting but not overwhelming. This is the first book in a series of three books so I look forward to digging into the next two!
If you like the Expanse series or just sci-fi in general I think you’ll like this one too.
