Velvet Was The Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
This book was interesting. A lonely secretary, Maite, investigates the disappearance of her neighbor, Leonora, journeying deeper and deeper into a world of student radicals and dissidents. Meanwhile, Elvis, a criminal, also seeks out Leonora for his shadowy boss, crossing paths with Maite and ultimately becoming enamored with her. This story immediately pulled me in and held my attention throughout. The characters were thoroughly formed and interesting. Through shifting perspectives, I wanted to get to know them more and see where their stories would end up. You could tell the plot was meticulously crafted, layers upon layers woven together and unfurling at a leisurely pace. There was the perfect amount of exposition. It read very smoothly.
